Fantasy worlds, fictional universesEdit

Under Category:Fictional locations what should be under Fantasy worlds? What under Fictional universes and perhaps in turn under Parallel universes (fiction)?

Some current instances: Harry Potter universe is in both cats fantasy worlds and fictional universes. Middle-earth is in cat fantasy worlds but is called a "fictional universe setting" in its lead sentence; Tolkien's legendarium is in cat fictional universe but its lead sentence makes it a set of writings. Category:Oz (franchise) is in cat fantasy worlds but a map of Oz (image) is our primary illustration for the Fictional universe article. --P64 (talk) 01:53, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Why not just, Wikipedia: WikiProject FantasyEdit

Why is this WikiProject special page not just WikiProject Fantasy? Would it not be just as easy to have a WikiProject effort that pertains to Fantasy no matter what the medium may be? For one thing, the fact that it took me more than a couple seconds to find this specific category, WikiProject Novels/Fantasy, was a tad annoying. If you search WikiProject Fantasy in wikipedia's SE or even in Google, you very seriously do not get linked to this page at all. Furthermore, a couple fantasy articles apparently consider themselves, perhaps mistakenly, under the reins of Category:WikiProject Fantasy (, but obviously WP:FANTASY does not truly exist.

Briefly skimming this talk page, I did not see any discourse related to the removing of the unnecessarily specific "Novels/" aspect of this category, but as an outside observer, I highly recommend this be at least considered.

I did see in the case of the Harry Potter films, for instance, that "This article is within the scope of WikiProject Novels", but there actually is absolutely no WikiProject directly associated with fantasy that seems to be involved with the Harry Potter film related articles. While I appreciate that many fantasy films are based on some sort of fantasy novel that preceded it, making it within the scope of Novels/Fantasy, there unquestionably exist films with original screenplays that technically would not fit under this technicality. For example, Labyrinth is a fantasy film not based on a book. The Talk Page for Labyrinth only contains references to the American and British film task forces. While the Labyrinth article is genuinely quite good, other articles for fantasy films not based on books could definitely benefit from the expertise of the Fantasy task force. Examples include:

Legend (film)

The City of Lost Children

I am well aware that none of you know me and that I have only recently started contributing to Wikipedia again after a long hiatus. But I still propose that WikiProject Fantasy be brought to life, with its scope being all articles that pertain to fantasy no matter the form of media. I do believe that WP:SciFi has this very goal, dealing with Science Fiction very generally. I thought it quite peculiar indeed that many articles such as those for the Lord of the Rings films are under the scope of no project whose mission broadly involves excellence in Fantasy-related articles.

If the name is perhaps due to some tradition for which I am unaware of, I do apologize. Moreover, I want to make it clear that I have no intention to insult or disrespect any of you in this fine task force who put in what I know is a significant amount of effort into making Fantasy related articles on Wikipedia good articles.

I simply have limitless amounts of adoration for fantasy (and science fiction) in all vessels that it may come in, and I am sure many of you hold these feelings within you, as well. I just think a more organized group with a broader scope that improves all fantasy related articles on Wikipedia will not only have a more efficient time at their goals, but will also better recruit those, such as myself, who may wish to contribute their own efforts into making Wikipedia the best it can be.

Thanks for reading. lethalenoki (talk) 22:26, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Discussion at WP:CFD may uncover the history of Category:WikiProject Fantasy and the nonexistent corresponding wikiproject, if no one here knows it.
Harry Potter. Only a few months ago, the Harry Potter Wikiproject (all media) was converted to a Novels Wikiproject task force and its talk page (with 13 archives) moved to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Novels/Harry Potter task force. --converted in July but not yet listed as a Novels task force--
(interjection) At Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Novels/Navigation#Harry Potter task force, I have noted last summer's redirection of WP: HP to a WP Novels task force. That template {{WPNOVELS}} needs update for HP task force and perhaps others, if it/they are official. --P64 (talk) 15:52, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
The main reason for shutdown, i understand, was inactivity that was expected to continue because the film series is now complete and no more Potterverse writing by Rowling is expected soon. The May proposal specified WP Novels or WP Media (evidently intending WP Media franchises) as a target; not WP Film. There is some discussion on the linked WP HP talk page. Note that another editor might prefer WP Media franchises but that is inactive (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Media franchises only four comments during 2012; no mention of WP HP); I might prefer WP Children's literature but that is much less active (Wikipedia talk: WikiProject Children's literature from 2006-06; with three archives). WP Novels is more active (Wikipedia talk: WikiProject Novels from 2002-10; 16 archives).
-- re Harry Potter, however, Wikipedia talk: WikiProject Novels archive 16 includes three July/August notes all by User:George Ho who proposed and executed the conversion to a task force. It seems that the incorporation of WP HP was not discussed here.
(FYI, WP: WikiProject Animals in media was created at about the same time, expanded from a proposal for WP Animal literature. Three people supported but no others have joined.)
Science fiction. Existence of WP Science fiction WP: SF alongside WP Novels/Science fiction, while Fantasy is only a novels task force, has fostered some anomalies, I believe. I have not found much illuminating discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Novels/Science fiction task force (from 2007-02; no archives) or at WP SF (from 2006-12) --whose talk is divided between Wikipedia talk: WikiProject Science fiction (with two archives) and Wikipedia:WikiProject Science Fiction/Discussion Forum (with one archive).

Kit WhitfieldEdit

Today Kit Whitfield was deleted as an expired PROD while I was checking the backlinks. Whitfield is listed on World Fantasy Award for Best Novel but only as being nominated in 2010. What irks me at this point is that this makes Whitfield the only redlinked author at the featured World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. Also what got my attention was that it was an SPA placing the PROD and an IP was quick to remove incoming links after the article was deleted. I also left a note with the deleting admin @Miniapolis: who responded favouring deletion but not minding me undeleting. What do the experts say? Is there a chance of a rescue, or is it best left buried? Agathoclea (talk) 17:26, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Kit Whitfield is a known author in fantasy publishing, but she doesn't publish as frequently as most authors. I'm not sure what sources there are that talk about her. I found a couple, but haven't been able to check how credible they are. There is an SSFWorld interview with her and then there is her World Fantasy Award nomination and she had a Locus award nomination. Her book In Great Waters seems like it could easily have enough sources for an article. I would rather have an article on the book first then an article on the author, but I think an article on Kit Whitfield could happen. Edit Ferret (talk) 15:34, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
There is always the option to bundle in the novel and the author into one page, and split them later as the content gets too unwieldy. We have a number of author pages floating around like that, Sadads (talk) 17:38, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

The Isle of Octavia AfDEdit

This series has been nominated for deletion here. I'd normally argue for deletion, but since it was tagged with the project's template, I thought I better ask here whether it's notable enough to be included here or whether someone's tagged it in error. LS1979 (talk) 19:12, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Actually, even if it is decided that it is not notable, that wouldn't mean it was tagged in error. Tagging just means it is in the scope of the project; it's a separate question from notability. (That being said, members of this task force are good to weigh in on the notability question.) LadyofShalott 20:58, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
OK, understood. I made the comment on the AfD that it looks like self-published work and therefore probably not particularly notable. LS1979 (talk) 21:39, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

RRTF is hosting an Edit-A-ThonEdit

Announcing RRTF's second annual Edit-A-Thon! The event is being held June 23 through July 28 in honor of author Rick Riordan's June birthday and author/illustrator John Rocco's July birthday. The focus of the edit-a-thon will be on expanding Wikipedia's coverage of these two authors in an encyclopedic manner.

The Edit-A-Thon is open to all Wikipedia users - you do not need any experience with Riordan, Rocco, or RRTF! Prizes will be given for first, second, and third place and will consist of a barnstar and Amazon gift card. To enter, please visit this page. The winners will be announced by July 31.

More information on rules and scoring can also be found on the contest page. Questions about the subject material should be left on the RRTF forums. Questions about the contest should be left on the contest Q&A. Good luck and happy editing! -- 2ReinreB2 (talk) 22:34, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

Darkover and Darkover seriesEdit

I'd appreciate some comments on the Talk pages, please. I'd like opinions about how I am doing. I have stated guidelines for these articles and I am revising them accordingly. Wastrel Way (talk) Wastrel Way (talk) 22:10, 26 September 2019 (UTC) Eric

I broke my rule against joining and joined. The Darkover article is nearly done. Darkover series still needs some work, but I am slowly progressing. I wonder if the low importance and C-class could be upgraded since Darkover has so many fans. Wastrel Way (talk) 22:10, 26 September 2019 (UTC) Eric
@Wastrel Way: Those 2 articles seem to include way too much unencyclopedic detail for Wikipedia that might be better suited to an external wiki devoted to the series/franchise; some of it seems like it could be useful for fans, but most of it's not really suited to Wikipedia. The "notes" sections especially are also full of original research. I took a stab at removing the latter, but there's still a lot of excessive detail in the Darkover article (though I did remove some of the subsections that were just indiscriminate lists of phrases and expressions); the same is true to a lesser extent in the Darkover series article. (I'm not sure whether the Darkover setting is even independently notable enough to warrant its own article, but I'm no expert on that subject.) V2Blast (talk) 02:15, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web toolEdit

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? I noticed that many WikiProjects have Article Alert reports ("automated subscription-based news delivery"). Example: WP:WikiProject Science Fiction#Article alerts. I thought this might be useful, so I added the fantasy task force to AAlertBot's list.

RfC on whether and how to cover J. K. Rowling's trans-related views in the lead of her articleEdit

 – Pointer to relevant discussion elsewhere.

Please see: Talk:J. K. Rowling#RFC on how to include her trans-related views (and backlash) in the lead

I am "advertising" this RfC more broadly to relevant pages because someone selectively notified three socio-political wikiprojects that are likely to vote-stack the RfC with a single viewpoint, and the article already has a long history of factional PoV editwarring.

Central matters in this discussion and the threads leading up to it are labeling of Rowling, labeling of commenters on Rowling, why Rowling is notable, what is due or undue in the lead section, and whether quasi-numeric claims like "many", "a few", etc. in this context are legitimate or an OR/WEASEL issue.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  01:36, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

The idea that WikiProject Feminism or WikiProject Women Writers are likely to vote-stack the RfC with a single socio-political viewpoint seems self-satirizing, at least to me. But by all means, we do need fresh eyes on the lead of the arrivle, which has seen much whitewashing and FALSEBALANCE POV-based editing. Newimpartial (talk) 02:18, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
