Wikipedia:Proposed article splits

This is the page to make requests for the splitting of an article into two or more separate articles.

This process is usually undertaken to keep articles from becoming too large or unfocused; but may also occur when an element of an existing article gains substantial notoriety in its own right. In such a case, requests for splitting-off said content from an existing article into a newer, stand-alone article, should be directed here. After familiarizing yourself with the splitting process, please make your requests for article splitting below.

All split comments and discussions should be directed to the "discussion" subsection of the Original Article's Talk Page, NOT here.

Note Edit

Splits of CATEGORIES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
Splits of TEMPLATES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Templates for discussion.
MERGING of ARTICLES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Proposed article mergers.

Split requests Edit

If you need assistance with proposing a split, list it below and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the split completed, as there may be a backlog, and splits often require considerably more discussion than, for instance, a merge request. To request a split, list the article below as well as requested target article title(s). Include a short descriptive reason why you think a split is in order. Please sign your request(s). Thank you.

Making a request Edit

If you need assistance with proposing a split, list it below in "NEW REQUESTS" and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the split completed on its own. After a split is listed properly, move it to the "Answered requests" or "Awaiting consensus" sections below as appropriate. Please list new requests at the bottom of the section. Use the edit summary and list at least a link to the original article. Please legitimize your request by signing each listing or comment by typing four tildes (~~~~). Unsigned requests can not be honored.

To request your split, copy the following template, paste it at the bottom of the NEW REQUESTS section, and fill in (replace) the article titles specific to your request, and give the reason why you think the page should be split. (NOTE: Often the original article name and one of the preferred new names are the same. However, at least one of the preferred new name(s) should appear red.) Indicate if your request will involve Page Moves, creating Disambiguation Page(s), or any other related work. Also, please indicate if you are willing to do the split if such a consensus is reached.

*Split Original article name into Split-article preferred new name 1 and Split-article preferred new name 2. GIVE YOUR REASON FOR THE SPLIT HERE. If agreed, I {will} OR {cannot} do the split. ~~~~

New requests Edit

  • Split Carnivore protoparvovirus 1. The article about the feline parvovirus has been overwritten into an article about the Carnivore parvovirus 1, rather than creating a new one, causing several issues, here and at Wikidata (the worst) Therefore, Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 should be split at this moment into Feline panleukopenia back, then. The same should be applied to Wikidata (I'll do that, as this can be done manually by non-administrators). Amitie 10g (talk) 18:55, 23 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Wikidata issue is my oversight, but it should not have much bearing on what happens on en.wp.
The move was more or less triggered by the infobox going "Carnivore protoparvovirus 1" and boy that was a bad idea. I agree that we should get the FPL article back, considering it's about the disease and not about the specific group of virus that may or may not have anything to do with the illness (yes, this is about CPV2 being more common among cats than "FPLV" in Taiwan).
With that we still get an uncomfortable situation with Canine parvovirus and Mink enteritis virus, because by having the "virus" be the title we miss the fact that host-ranges aren't really that strict (see [PMID:11971764, section "Problems with the Current Parvovirus Nomenclature"]). Content-wise the articles are actually dealing with "Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 infection in dogs" and "... in minks", but the titles don't reflect that. • SPLIT Already took place, but has been (half-way) reverted: Emmanuel_Macron (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) into Presidency of Emmanuel Macron (until recently a redirect and a disambiguation page). Rationale: Article is almost 300K long; it takes forever to load. The natural break where the split ocuured—his presidency—cut the articles in half (still huge, but better than before). I conducted the split, but the split at the source article (Emmanuel Macron) was reverted. The split at The Presidency of Emmanuel Macron was not reverted. This resulted in a 150K wp:Content Fork that the person who reverted is fighting to maintain. Please weigh in on this issue. I will re-do the split if it is decided to proceed, but am walking away from the discussion for now as I have limited Wiki-time. Let me know if you need me. Thanks GenQuest "scribble" 04:28, 2 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Split Oscar Ichazo into Oscar Ichazo and Arica School. Arica School is a redirect to the Oscar Ichazo article; the Arica School section takes up most of that article, with multiple subheadings and sub-subheadings, so it seems like it should be its own article. I already attempted to split it myself, but I struggled with the short footnote templates enough that the article probably wouldn't have been sufficiently sourced due to the links not working. If agreed, I cannot do the split, for that reason. Suntooooth, it/he (talk/contribs) 16:08, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Split Apple Watch into Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra. With the announcement of the Apple Watch Ultra 2, it is clear that Apple sees the device as a seperate product line similar to the iPhone Pro series. The Ultra line of watches have a specific target market (hiking, trailing, & diving) and have enough distinct hardware and software features that set them apart from standard Apple Watch models even further than typical generational upgrades. TechnicalNewt (talk) 04:21, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Split Shoulder Arthritis into Glenohumeral arthritis and Acromioclavicular arthritis. The shoulder comprises the sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, glenohumeral, and scapulothoracic articulations. Each of these articulations should be considered separately as they have unique symptoms, epidemiology, and management. This split would involve the creation of separate acromioclavicular and glenohumeral osteoarthritis pages and the subsequent deletion of the Shoulder Arthritis page. If agreed, I {will} do the split. JThompson.Utexas (talk) 12:57, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Awaiting consensus Edit

After the involved article is tagged for the split discussion, the request should be added at (or moved to) the bottom of this section. This section can also be used if a proposal needs further discussion due to age, disagreement, or lack of consensus.

  • Split Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete into Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (material) and 2023 United Kingdom reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete scandal. The article in question has grown from a stub about the material in question into being dominated by the recent political scandal regarding its historical use and lack of maintenance within the UK. As a result it feels like it's moving outside its original purpose of documenting the material and its basic factual properties and use to instead also containing current events of politically-charged information such as what a minister said or promised to do or didn't do etc. Therefore I believe it would be better that the content relating to the political scandal aspects be moved to a separate article. If agreed, I will attempt to do the split (haven't done one before but willing to try). Apache287 (talk) 20:02, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Articles to be split Edit

After discussion concludes, completed requests indicating SPLIT is to be carried out should be moved below (to the bottom of this list). Notate as Working

Archived and rejected split requests Edit

When article discussion and split has been completed (if closed as proceed), notate and move the request to the TOP of the following ARCHIVED list. Articles that have been rejected for splitting should go here directly from the AWAITING CONSENSUS list. Please notate both types as Done, or Not done.

  • Split NF (rapper) into NF (rapper) and NF discography. The artist has 6 studio albums, 2 EPs, a mixtape, and about 25 singles, the majority of which have charted on multiple major country music charts, and several have won music awards. Due to the extensive nature of the discography, it would help de-clutter the original article to split it. If agreed, I will do the split. See discussion at Talk:NF (rapper)#Proposed split. • Split (DISCUSS) Domingo into Domingo (name). The people section of this disambiguation page is rather large, so it is better to split it off into a separate name set index page. If agreed, I may be able to do the split, if someone creates a redirect at the target location first, page creation is a protected process, so I can't actually create a new page. I may be able to do it if I have not rotated off my IP address at that time so that I can be informed; if I have rotated, I may nolonger have this discussion linked to. As an IP user I may be reverted in any changes I make. See discussion at TALK: Domingo#Split off the people section to Domingo (name). -- (talk) 20:30, 3 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Split Rui Borges (footballer) into Rui Borges (footballer, born 1973) and Rui Borges (footballer, born 1981). The current article is mixing up two players of the same name, one who has a Wikipedia article and one who doesn't. Here are profiles of both players from a Portuguese database: [1] [2] The footballer born 1973 who is the current subject of the article is not the same man who managed Mirandela and Academico Viseu and now manages Academica. This reference for when a man called Rui Borges became manager of Mirandela in 2017 said he was 35 and played for "Bragança, Trofense, Moreirense, Famalicão and Freamunde". This clearly identifies that Rui Borges as being the one born in 1981. (talk) 20:05, 22 September 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oppose: This is a distinction without a difference. The Bucking Bull breed and its registry have no need for a split. If the corporation needs a separate article, that's a separate question, not a split discussion (Like American Quarter Horse and American Quarter Horse Association). As usual, the lead editor on these articles appears to not have been notified. Montanabw(talk) 16:35, 1 August 2018 (UTC) Whoops, sorry, moved this to the discussion page of the article.
